Profiling Communication Strategies To Manage Learning & Behaviour

Profiling Communication Strategies To Manage Learning and Behaviour (PCS) provides a systematic method for structuring observations of strategies used by teachers to manage learning and behaviour. The Guidelines & Recommendations introduce and explain a protocol for enabling structured classroom or lesson observation, data analysis and presentation for reporting back, constructive discussion and consultation. The materials include an Observation Profile for recording both the verbal and nonverbal communication strategies used by the teacher that are directed at the learning task and behaviour; Spreadsheets to present the data graphically; and a Review Meeting Document that provides a platform for reporting back the data for further discussion, interpretation or consultation.

PCS was initially piloted at junior and secondary schools to collect systematic data on teacher-pupil interaction and to assess the efficacy of behaviour management strategies. Out-reach teachers at a special school for pupils with emotional and behavioural needs were trained to use the PCS to support teachers managing pupils in mainstream schools. An evaluation of the data from the pilot study was undertaken by Professor Cecilio Mar Molinero, University of Southampton, using multidimensional scaling and associated multivariate statistical techniques.

What PCS is about

Making structured observations of communication strategies.
Developing a profile of the strategies observed.
Promoting positive strategies for managing behaviour and learning.
Reducing behaviour difficulties.

What PCS does

Develops a record and profile of communication strategies used in education and training contexts to show:-
The number of management strategies directed at the learning task and behaviour
The range of management strategies used
The ratio of positive to negative strategies
The relative use of verbal and non-verbal strategies.
Provides data from observations that can be used to inform and guide decisions about teaching, learning and behaviour management.

PCS Materials

Available soon (on CD ROM/PDF files)
  • Profiling Communication Strategies: Contents - Introduction & Guidelines / Communication Strategies with Examples / PCS Record Forms - an Observation Profile for recording Verbal & Non-Verbal Strategies, an Observation Notes form and a Review Meeting Document for reporting back, discussion and consultation.
  • PCS Slide Presentation on a separate PDF Acrobat File for easy viewing. This includes:- graphic examples of recorded data to illustrate results from individual observations and from observations taken across year groups or grade levels; guidelines on how to use the Observation Profile and how to interpret the data; key points to consider about communication, observational recording and environmental factors that affect learning; indicators of good practice; and guidelines & recommendations for use.
  • PCS Record Forms - on a separate file for ease of printing.
  • PCS Data Spreadsheets - providing worked examples from the Observation Profiles showing how the data can be presented graphically. These show data from individual observations and from grouped observations: e.g. Percentage of strategies directed at Task and Behaviour; Frequency of Verbal and Non-Verbal Strategies; Frequencies for Positive and Negative Strategies directed at Task and Behaviour; Frequencies across the range of strategies directed at Task and Behaviour; and Strategies directed at Task and Behaviour across Year Groups.
The research Paper - "Profiling, Developing and Assessing Effective Strategies for Managing Learning and Behaviour" by Dennis Roberts and Cecilio Mar Molinero (2001) is available online at Discussion Paper Series - Management Papers 2002, University of Southampton, School of Management or as an html file at Discussion Papers in Management "Profiling, Developing and Assessing Effective Strategies for Managing Learning and Behaviour" by D.Roberts & C. Mar Molinero (2001) This describes the projects where PCS was piloted and includes an evaluation of the data by Professor Mar Molinero using multidimensional scaling and associated multivariate statistical techniques.

    How PCS can be used
  • To obtain base-line data on communication strategies used by teachers to manage learning and behaviour.
  • To provide systematic information on verbal and nonverbal strategies directed at the learning task and behaviour.
  • To develop observation and recording skills and facilitate constructive consultative work.
  • To evaluate and monitor the development of positive teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies.

    Where PCS can be used

  • In educational and training situations where it may be appropriate and useful to undertake structured observations of the range of management strategies used in communication to promote learning and manage behaviour.

    Suitable for use by

  • Professionals with an interest in recording, monitoring and reviewing the use of positive verbal and non-verbal communication strategies used by teachers and trainers to manage learning and behaviour.
  • Educational consultants, advisors, inspectors, psychologists, special needs coordinators, teacher trainers, teacher training establishments, headteachers, heads of departments, supervisors, managers.
  • Educational consultants and others with responsibilities for observing and advising on teaching practice, training, professional development, policy management and behavioural change.
